2009 has come and is in full swing…and as is often the case with the turning of a new year, its time for NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS.
We all tend to ponder and contemplate the year just gone and the year ahead, this year especially with the global economic crisis affecting us all, as well as many humanitarian issues that fill the news. We all find ourselves thinking about what’s going to happen in this new-year… the economic crisis…a new US president…security… global warming…the list is endless. There’s a lot of fear in the world because of so many things, which all seem to be more at the front of our minds as a new year begins. However, at the start of a new year there is also a lot of hope in the air. Many of us are optimistic about a brand new year-a new start.
The lesson this month is about taking a good look at what we are FEARFUL of; and what we are HOPEFUL of!
The first thing to do is to make a list of the 10 things you’re most fearful of...
Then, sit quietly reviewing that list and try to evaluate why you are fearful and where these fears stem from?
Once we’ve made those evaluations, then take the exercise one step further and try to evaluate what would happen if these fears came to pass. If they did…What would happen to your life? How would it affect your life? How would it affect the people around you?
So, for example: You lose your job! The reason is the economic crisis and your firm is downsizing. The result of this would be that you now have no income and you’re living on your savings, (if you have any). The worst thing that can happen if you lose your job and have no income would be that you would have to also downsize to a smaller house/apartment. Perhaps you’d have to move out of the area, leave family and friends. Not eat out and have the little extra luxuries you’re used to.
For this first part of the exercise take each and every one of your 10 fears and note what would be the worst scenario possible if it should happen.
Now you’re probably looking at a list of your 10 worst fears and feeling quite sorry for yourself, even scared and distraught. All of these terrible things COULD happen to you! And now to the upside! It’s time to turn your negative list in to a positive…
So what is the upside of this? It would seem that there is no upside, right? It would seem that you have lost everything that was valuable to you. Or so at first glance it would seem. But there is always an upside. There is always a positive that can come out of a negative and this exercise will help you discover what they are and how to look for them. What might those positives be?
Example: If, like the above scenario you DO, in fact lose your job, some positives to come out of this negative could be…
1)You get to meet new people.
2)Make new friends.
3)Find out who your real friends are.
4)Perhaps learn a new skill in order to get a new job.
5)Find a better job…one that makes you happier and more content.
6)Find a new way of life….and then you grow.
Then the second part of this month’s exercise is to look at your list again and for each of your ten negatives, look AGAIN and find the possible positives in each fear.
So to complete the exercise you will end up with two lists, one with your 10 worst fears and how negatively they could affect you and then a second list with the same fears, but turning them on their heads and listing how these could possibly have some positive affects for you.
Even in the direst of times we can always turn our negatives in to positives but we have to practice and learn how to do this on a daily basis. It is too easy to become depressed and to think that your life as you know it is over and it is too easy to go down a negative path, but trauma is merely about change and change, although it can be very painful, is what brings about our spiritual growth and creates in us a positive outlook.
