I have just returned from Bob's house, and let me tell you, I am inspired. Bob is a patient of mine who has an incurable brain tumor, diagnosed in January of this year, and he has shown himself to be the most remarkable man, perhaps one of the most remarkable I have ever had the privilege to meet.
When Bob and his wife, Lesley first came to the healing center Bob had no faith, no belief in God or in a higher power. They had no idea what to expect from us, but their options at this point were limited, and we were at least an option of a sort. Now Bob feels that we, my team and I, are a God send. We, my team and I, we feel that Bob was God sent, Heaven sent, to teach us some valuable lessons. The lesson of the week comes directly from my time with him today.
"You've always got to focus on the positive", he says. Well, easy to say, but not always so easy for many of us to do, myself included. But Bob teaches us that we have to try.
This got me thinking. How many times in my life have I been ready to give up? How many times have I been ready to fall into that big hole of depression that has sometimes seemed so welcoming, such a wonderful escape from the realities of my life? How many times has life seemed to give me a really good, hard kick, one that I didn't like? And how many times have I survived? The answer to all of these questions is many, many, many..just like most of us. But the most important question is how..how did I survive. The answer is simple. I gave myself something more important to focus on, and this is what saved me.
When my daughter was young, I focused on her needs.
When I was depressed and close to a nervous breakdown, I focused on the next hour, the next task, the next day.
When I was ill and afraid that I would die, I focused on the next treatment, the next step to recovery, the next decision I would need to make. It was all about focus...focusing on the ability to survive in whatever way I could.
So.here is the lesson for the month.
Think about those times in your life when you have needed to focus, to give your attention to something in order that you can survive the next moment, the next hour, the next day of your life, to stay sane, to stay alive, to avoid becoming useless, to yourself and others. Make a list, keeping in mind that your list will remind you that your ability to focus is what has given you strength determination and power. Your ability to focus, my ability to focus is what drives us forward, helps us survive to live to fight another day.
Now make another list, this time concentrating on your life over the next few days. Think about the things that are important to you, that you really want to come to fruition. Then think about what kind of focus you need to make things happen in the way you want them to. Each morning, as you wake up, try to focus on some of the tasks of the day, and see if you can do this in a way that is positive, that inspires you to make the best of your day. Remember, there are some things we have no control over, but we can control our responses, our actions and our attitude. There are other things we can have control over. Either way, if we focus, if we can motivate ourselves in this way, then we empower ourselves...we own our power. Bob truly owns his power, and sets a really good example for us all.
If you would like to know more about Bob, and about his experience with the dying process, our new CD, "A Conversation With Bob", will be on sale within the next couple of weeks. All proceeds from this CD will go to the Rosemary Altea Healing And Educational Foundation, based in Vermont.
